Free EAN-8 barcode generator
EAN-8 carries an 8-digit GTIN-8 on packs too small for an EAN-13. Type 7 digits and the generator adds the check digit, or type all 8 to have it checked.

7 digits (we add the check digit) or 8 digits (we check it). EAN-8 numbers are issued separately by GS1.
Check digit 0 added: 95212340.
A barcode is only as unique as its number: the same number always draws the same bars. For trade, use numbers licensed to your company; anyone can check who a GTIN belongs to in Verified by GS1 (how).
The preview also updates as you type.

Black on white only: colored bars and backgrounds are a common cause of scan failures. Everything is drawn in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
The width of the narrowest bar. Defaults follow GS1’s standard size for this type. Size and print settings explained
SVG downloads at the printed size above, for design and label software. PNG for a 300 dpi printer (12 dots/mm): 4 printer dots per module, so X is 0.333 mm (101%) and the bars 18.42 mm tall; print it at 100% scale. Free for personal and commercial use, with no watermark. Test a printed sample with the scanner that will read it.

| Specifications | ISO/IEC 15420 and the GS1 General Specifications, section 5.2.2.2 |
A GTIN-8 is not a shortened GTIN-13. GS1 Member Organisations issue GTIN-8s from their own GS1-8 Prefixes, and the GS1 General Specifications (Table 1-5) set aside GTIN-8s starting with 0 or 2 for numbers used only inside a company. GS1 also says UPC-E and EAN-8 are meant for small packages and that UPC-A or EAN-13 should be used whenever space permits. GS1 US describes EAN-8 the same way: for packaging where a UPC-A or EAN-13 will not fit. The General Specifications (section 4.2.7) authorise a GTIN-8 only when the pack’s total printable area is under 80 cm², its largest label is under 40 cm², or it is a cylinder less than 30 mm across.
A printed example
95212340, using GS1-8 Prefix 952, which GS1 reserves for demonstrations and examples. At 100% the symbol is 81 × 0.330 mm = 26.73 mm wide with its quiet zones, and the bars are 18.23 mm tall. What each setting does for an EAN-8
- Data. 7 digits get the check digit added; 8 digits are checked, and a wrong last digit is named.
- X-dimension and bar height. Start at 0.330 mm and 18.23 mm. The generator warns outside 0.264–0.660 mm, and when the bars are shorter than 18.23 × X ÷ 0.330 mm.
- Quiet zone. 7 modules each side by default, GS1’s minimum for EAN-8.
- Downloads. SVG at the printed size; PNG for a 203, 300 or 600 dpi printer in whole dots. At 300 dpi the PNG uses 4 dots per module, 0.333 mm, with 18.42 mm bars.
Common mistakes
- Dropping digits from a GTIN-13 to make it fit. The result is a different number, possibly someone else’s. An EAN-8 needs a GTIN-8 issued as such.
- Choosing EAN-8 to save a little space. GS1 wants EAN-13 or UPC-A wherever they fit, and before a GTIN-8 it asks you to consider a smaller X or a label redesigned to make room; check the smaller X range first (down to 80%) before switching symbols.
- Treating a 0 or 2 number as a product number. Those GTIN-8 ranges are for use inside one company and are not unique between companies. The barcode checker flags them.
Worked example
- Type
9521234. From the right: 4×3 + 3 + 2×3 + 1 + 2×3 + 5 + 9×3 = 60, already a multiple of ten, so the check digit is 0:95212340. - The readout shows a 26.7 mm wide symbol at 100%, with 18.23 mm bars.
- For a 203 dpi printer, set X to 0.375 (3 dots) and the height to at least 20.72 mm (18.23 × 0.375 ÷ 0.330).
