What you can make
- PDF labels. One label per value on a sheet template or a label-printer page, drawn as vector shapes, with an optional line of text such as a product name from another CSV column. The text shrinks to fit the label (down to 4 pt, then it is shortened) and can use Latin letters and common punctuation.
- ZIP of SVG. One SVG per value at the printed size, for design or label software.
- ZIP of PNG. One PNG per value for a 203, 300 or 600 dpi printer, every module a whole number of dots, with the resolution written into the file.
- ZPL. One label format per value for Zebra and ZPL-compatible thermal printers.
Every barcode type the barcode generator makes is available, from UPC and GS1-128 to QR, Data Matrix and PDF417, up to 1,000 values per run. Each value is checked by the same rules as in the generator, and the tool names the first lines it cannot make.
Label templates
Sheet layouts are taken from the label maker’s own template files, read on October 27, 2026. For the US Letter sheets, the label sizes are Avery’s stated sizes and the positions come from the label outlines in Avery’s PDF templates. For the A4 sheets, the label size, gaps, row height and top margin come from the table in Avery UK’s Word templates, with the columns centred across the page (within 0.2 mm of the Word table). Label printer pages are simply the size of the label.
| Template | Labels | Label size | First label at | Pitch across × down |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avery 5160 | 30 (3 × 10) | 66.67 mm × 25.40 mm | 4.76 mm across, 12.70 mm down | 69.85 mm × 25.40 mm |
| Avery 5163 | 10 (2 × 5) | 101.60 mm × 50.80 mm | 3.95 mm across, 12.70 mm down | 106.38 mm × 50.80 mm |
| Avery 5167 | 80 (4 × 20) | 44.45 mm × 12.70 mm | 7.62 mm across, 12.70 mm down | 52.07 mm × 12.70 mm |
| Avery L7160 | 21 (3 × 7) | 63.50 mm × 38.10 mm | 7.22 mm across, 15.13 mm down | 66.02 mm × 38.10 mm |
| Avery L7163 | 14 (2 × 7) | 99.06 mm × 38.10 mm | 4.67 mm across, 15.13 mm down | 101.60 mm × 38.10 mm |
| Avery L7651 | 65 (5 × 13) | 38.10 mm × 21.17 mm | 4.70 mm across, 10.88 mm down | 40.62 mm × 21.17 mm |
| Label printer 4 × 6 in | 1 (1 × 1) | 101.60 mm × 152.40 mm | — | — |
| Label printer A6 | 1 (1 × 1) | 105.00 mm × 148.00 mm | — | — |
| Label printer 2 × 1 in | 1 (1 × 1) | 50.80 mm × 25.40 mm | — | — |
The 4 × 6 inch and A6 sizes are the ones the GS1 General Specifications (section 6.6.4.5) name for logistic labels that carry an SSCC with limited extra data.
The alignment test page
- Choose your template and press “Alignment test page”.
- Print it on plain paper at 100%, with “Actual size” or no scaling selected and no “Fit to page”.
- Check that the scale line measures 100 mm (40 mm on label-printer pages), then hold the page against a label sheet up to the light. Every outline should sit on a label edge.
- If everything is shifted the same way, enter the correction under “Alignment and partly used sheets” and print the test page again: if the outlines print 1 mm too far right, enter −1 in “Move right”. The offsets apply to the labels too.
What each setting does
- Your values. Paste one value per line, or open a CSV file saved from Excel or Google Sheets (comma, semicolon or tab separated). Choose which column to encode and, for PDF labels, which column to print as text. A header row is detected and can be switched off. Repeated values are pointed out.
- Barcode type. The same types and input rules as the generator; the hint under the menu says what each one accepts.
- Fit to the label. Every label gets the same size: the largest that fits the longest value, capped at GS1’s maximum X for retail and carton codes and at 1 mm per module otherwise. For UPC, EAN and ISBN it also keeps GS1’s full bar height for that X, so the bars are not cut short, whenever the label allows that at GS1’s minimum X or more: 0.264 mm on PDF labels, and in ZPL, which always goes to a thermal printer, the 0.249 mm GS1 allows for on-demand printing. On a label too short for that, it uses that minimum X, so the bars are cut short as little as possible. The tool warns when a label forces a barcode below GS1’s minimum X or shorter than GS1’s height, and when any other type comes out with an X under 0.25 mm.
- Size I set. Uses your X-dimension and bar height and tells you which value does not fit.
- Skip labels. Leaves the first labels of a partly used sheet empty.
- ZPL. Each label is one format:
^XA, the label size in dots with^PWand^LL, the home position^LH0,0, the barcode as a^GFAgraphic placed with^FOand closed with^FS, one copy with^PQ1, then^XZ. The barcode is drawn on the printer’s own dot grid, counting 8, 12 or 24 dots per mm for 203, 300 and 600 dpi printheads as Zebra’s ZPL programming guide does. ZPL allows at most 99,999 bytes in one graphic field, so a larger barcode goes out as several graphic fields, one under the other, that print as one image.
Common mistakes
- Printing with “Fit to page”. Scaling moves every label and changes the barcode size. Print at 100%.
- Losing leading zeros in Excel. A UPC like 036000291452 becomes 36000291452 if the column is a number. Format the column as text before typing or pasting, as Microsoft Support explains. An 11-digit UPC is read as a number without its check digit, so the tool would add one and draw a different, wrong number; it warns whenever it adds check digits.
- A ZPL file for the wrong resolution. ZPL positions are in printer dots, so a file made for 300 dpi prints about one and a half times as large on a 203 dpi printer, and may not fit. Check the printer’s resolution first.
- Retail barcodes squeezed onto small labels. UPC and EAN need about 37 mm of width and 26 mm of height with their digits at 100%. Avery 5167 labels are 12.7 mm tall, so the tool warns that the bars come out truncated.
Worked example: 120 bin labels on Avery 5160
- In your spreadsheet, put the headings Bin and Description in the first row, list the bin codes BIN-A01-0001 to BIN-A04-0030 under Bin with a description for each, and save it as CSV.
- Open the file here. The tool finds the header row; choose Bin as the column to encode and Description as the text on the label.
- Keep Code 128, “Fit to the label” and “PDF labels” with Avery 5160. The preview shows page 1 and the X the codes will get; 120 labels make four sheets of 30.
- Print the alignment test page first, then the PDF at 100%, and scan a few labels before sticking them up.
